The Bone Collector – Jeffery Deaver

Warning: Possible Spoilers

Lincoln Rhyme isn’t just left paralyzed during an accident while searching a crime scene, he’s emotionally shattered as well. As the foremost expert on forensics, he struggles to deal with the loss of his greatest asset – being able to visit crime scenes in person. While he contemplates putting an end to his misery, a new killer emerges and challenges him to a duel of wits. Alongside a new team, including the promising young officer, Amelia Sachs – who reluctantly joins the cause – Rhyme must put the accident behind him to dive once more into the dark realm of a maniac’s mind.

The Bone Collector is a mystery novel by Jeffery Deaver and the first in his Lincoln Rhyme series.

A friend of mine brought this book as a gift for my birthday one year and, honestly, it’s a shame I’ve only just gotten around to reading it. In my defense though, it was the same year my family and I upped sticks and came to the States so perhaps I can be forgiven for it being hidden in a box for a while.

I digress.

While the other Lincoln Rhyme books I’ve read delve into his desire to master his disability, The Bone Collector focuses mainly on the emotional fallout and devastated hopelessness he feels at his situation. The novel also demonstrates Rhyme’s motivation – or perhaps that should be sheer stubbornness?

Although reluctant to put off ending the ruins of his life, once Rhyme sets his mind to finding the killer – and convinces Sachs to work for him as his eyes and ears – nothing can stop him.

I have to admit though, because I’ve read the series out of order, I missed Pulaski in this one. Rhyme’s team isn’t quite the same without the ditzy-but-promising newbie from the later books. Still an enjoyable read though!

It just goes to show that even when all hope is lost there’s always something to cling on to. Even if you can only sink your teeth into it and hold on as hard as you can.

‘Til next week!
